Hi everyone! We’re back from Europe and I’m officially back in the office with stacks of “to do’s” on my list for this week, but I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t get de-railed and go off on a tangent…so here I am, on a cloudy July afternoon, getting ready to chat all about in-home sessions!
If you follow along with my blog regularly (or as regularly as I get to posting these days…which is not, lol), then you would already know that I L.O.V.E in-home sessions. They are so intimate and personal and really allow you to capture those authentic playful moments in a family or couples lives. In-home sessions are a perfect way to capture everyone, just they way you are.
Preparing your home
Together, we will decide on the best location(s) for your photos. I’ll be on the look out for rooms that have the best natural light. Late morning/afternoon tends to be the best for lighting. Something to consider, what kind of look are you hoping for? Darker surroundings (Duvet covers, throws…etc) will often give a more moody feel, whereas whites + pastels encourage a lighter and brighter feel.
Please do not feel like you need to deep clean your entire home before my arrival. It’s pretty easy to hide a couple of toys, clothes or clutter in a nearby closet or in another room. As much as a neat space makes for simple and clean photos, your home still needs to tell your story.
Preparing your littles
When prepping your little ones for an in-home session, feel free to share with them that I am coming over to be silly and have fun with them. I will want to see their favourite toy or prized possession, or how high they can jump on the bed. I’d be happy to photograph you and your family partaking in your favourite family activity – whether that be in the home, or out in the yard. Amongst the silliness, I will ask them to give you their biggest bear hugs and kisses, and I just bet that we will see some beautiful smiles and laughter throughout.
What to wear
Let’s admit it – choosing what to wear can be so stressful! It’s enough to make anyone crazy, even us photographers. Here are a few tips to help you through the process. Your wardrobe should reflect who you are. Choosing comfortable, classic clothing that allows you to move will keep everyone feeling at ease. Neutrals are timeless (but pops of colour can be beautiful and can really showcase your personality). Long, flowy dresses or skirts, or simple basics like scarves and accessories photograph beautifully, as do different textures and shades. As a family, wearing complimentary colours will coordinate your look well, but preferably not everyone wearing jeans and black t-shirts. Mom’s, we suggest you chose your outfit(s) first (something you really love and feel beautiful in), and the coordinate the rest of the family around you. Staying away from dark colours or logos will help you achieve that lighter, more classic look.
Last, but not least, it’s a great idea to think about a few things that your family really enjoys. Does your 3 year old love to dance? Does your 6 year old enjoy helping you in the kitchen? If there is something that your family enjoys, please let me know so that we can work to incorporate it into your session – it will make your collection of images so much more meaningful and personal.
I hope you’ve found this information to be helpful in your planning – whether being photographed by me, or anyone else. If you’re interested in booking an in-home family session, you can reach me above through my contact for, or send me an email directly to: email@example.com
